Breathe Your Way to Social Media Success: How Mindset Shifts and Breathwork Can Break Mental Barriers for Women-Owned Businesses

We all know that social media is an essential tool for small business owners to connect with their audience, share their brand story, and drive growth. However, building and maintaining an impactful presence can be challenging. Mental barriers like fear of visibility, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and overwhelm often create resistance, making it difficult to show up consistently or authentically online.

The good news is that there are simple, powerful tools to help overcome these internal obstacles.

That’s why I thought it would be valuable to share Emily King's experience. She is a Marketing & Breathwork Consultant who empowers female founders with 360° marketing strategies and mindfulness practices. Emily’s insights offer a great opportunity to learn more about breathwork and how it can support business owners. Together, we came up with the idea for this blog post, which was written by Emily.

What is breathwork?

For those who haven’t heard of this term before, or for those who have but don’t fully understand it, let me explain. Breathwork is an umbrella term (much like exercise) for a whole host of different ways to breathe and use your breath. It encompasses learning how to breathe ‘properly’ into your diaphragm and breathing in different ways to oxygenate your body.

In its essence, breathwork is a holistic practice.

Holistic here means ‘treatment of the whole person’ rather than the mind (therapy) or the body (massage) separately.

With breathwork, it’s about linking the mind, body and emotions together in union.

How does that happen?

Breathing in certain ways can reduce stress, anxiety and worry from the mind by taking you into a calm, relaxed state in your nervous system. When it comes to the body, 70% of toxins are actually released from your body through your breath so as you practice focused breathing, you’re breathing out carbon dioxide from your body and breathing in more oxygen. If you’re wondering how emotions come into it, both trauma and emotions can get trapped inside your body (without you even knowing it). By breathing consciously, and consistently, you are subconsciously releasing and letting go of emotional baggage from your body.

There are so many different types of breathwork, ranging from: rebirthing, connected, shamanic, holotropic, transformational, tummo, euphoric and the widely known Wim Hof method. My preferred method is pranayama because it’s easier for beginners to access and although not as deep of a journey as some of these other experiences, it’s benefits can be felt in minutes.

By combining breathwork with strategic mindset shifts, female founders can find greater ease, confidence, and clarity on social media. Here, we’ll explore how these practices can help you break through mental blocks and create a social media presence that feels genuine and resonates.

Identifying Common Mental Barriers

Fear of visibility
Many female business owners feel vulnerable on social media, fearing judgement or criticism from followers. This fear of visibility can prevent them from sharing authentically, limiting their ability to engage and connect with their audience.

Perfectionism
The belief that everything needs to be “perfect” before posting often leads to ‘analysis paralysis’. Tweaking and revising content endlessly, or scrapping it altogether, keeps many business owners from engaging consistently.

Imposter syndrome
Self-doubt can be a major hurdle, as feelings of inadequacy often prevent women entrepreneurs from fully owning their expertise. Imposter syndrome often leads to hesitancy in sharing valuable insights or accomplishments, which in turn limits their authority and presence online.

Overwhelm
The demands of running a business can make social media feel like just another item on a very long to-do list. With so many tasks to juggle, business owners often feel too overwhelmed to approach social media strategically or meaningfully.

The Power of Mindset Shifts

Embrace progress over perfection
Instead of aiming for “perfect” posts, it’s important to focus on progress and consistency. By shifting the goal from flawlessness to growth, you can begin showing up regularly, which helps audiences connect with your brand over time.

Reframe imposter syndrome
Imposter syndrome can be reframed as an opportunity to connect and learn from your audience. Remember that everyone has a unique perspective, and sharing your challenges and journey authentically can foster a deeper connection.

Break down overwhelm
View social media as an extension of your brand’s voice and an opportunity to serve your audience, rather than a chore or a waste of time. This shift in perspective can reduce stress, allowing you to approach social media more purposefully and with less pressure.

Focus on service and authenticity
When you see social media as a platform for serving others rather than self-promotion, you’ll likely feel more motivated and genuine. This mindset allows for a more relaxed approach, making it easier to create content that speaks to your audience’s needs and interests.

How Breathwork Can Help Clear Mental Blocks

Breathwork as a grounding tool
Breathwork helps centre and ground you before engaging with social media. A few minutes of deep breathing can calm the nervous system, allowing you to approach social interactions with clarity and confidence. For example, try a grounding breathwork exercise before going live or recording video content to calm any nerves.

Breathwork for stress and overwhelm
The pressures of running a business and managing a social media presence can add up. Simple breathing techniques, such as box breathing or deep tummy breathing, can help reduce stress, giving you a greater sense of control. Practising this before sitting down to create or schedule content can reduce overwhelm and increase productivity.

Breathwork for creativity
Breathwork can also help boost creativity, providing clarity when you’re experiencing content blocks or struggling to align with your brand’s message. Creative breathwork exercises can clear mental clutter, allowing for fresh ideas and authentic energy to come through in your content.

Breathwork Practice to Get Started

Here’s a simple, three-minute breathwork exercise that can help reduce anxiety and improve focus before engaging on social media:

  1. Find a comfortable position: Sit or stand with your feet firmly on the ground.

  2. Breathe deeply: Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, expanding your belly, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this three times.

  3. Box breathing: Inhale through your nose for a count of four, hold for four, exhale for four, and pause for four. Repeat this pattern for a few cycles.

  4. Return to a normal breathing pattern: Let your breath settle back into its natural rhythm, feeling grounded and present.

This short ritual can be a powerful grounding technique before you create or post content, helping you to approach social media with a calm and clear mindset.

Some Maths For You:

Mindset + Breathwork = Confident Social Media Presence

By combining breathwork with mindset shifts, you can transform how you approach social media. Addressing mental barriers while using breathwork to ground and clear your mind fosters an authentic, consistent, and impactful presence online. This combination helps build confidence and strengthens the connection between your brand and audience, allowing you to engage from a place of service, authenticity, and resilience.

Conclusion

Integrating breathwork and mindset practices into your routine can help you break through mental barriers on social media. By embracing these tools, you’ll feel more confident, focused, and prepared to share your unique voice and value with your audience. As a next step, try the grounding breathwork technique before your next social media task and observe the shift in your experience.
